This year, I’ve found myself getting way more excited about Autumn & Winter than before, I have always been more of a summer chick. For various reasons really, it's the first proper year in my house (that its not a building site) so I can really go to town on making it look (and smell) super festive. I’ve found myself appreciating the changes of the season more, like the shades of oranges in the trees and the frost on the grass (again, the view from my new kitchen every morning is super pleasing). Also I’m just getting more involved in festive activities, mulled wine with the girls, festive coffees and trips to Christmas fairs and markets.
I’ve also really got to grips with styling up winter warmers this year, I feel like I’ve branched out a bit more and injected a little more colour and flamboyance to the wardrobe. Experimenting more with texture and layering, its been really satisfying. So I thought I would share some of my winter favourites, but also my wish list.
I recently had a big clear out of all my old coats to make more space in the coat cupboard (door wouldn’t close properly), to then accidentally replace them with new bunch. Now it was an accident, promise.
Whereas before I always stuck with staples, like a relatively smart black coat, faux fur, leather and denim (I mean still my faves) - I’ve taken more to different colours and textures and really gone for statement. The first winter coat I bought this year was this pink Boucle Textured Coat that I got from Topshop. It’s an absolute dream. I have a thing for dirty pink and the combination of the oversized fit and fluffy texture make it a real treat. Its the perfect ‘ throw over to hide my sins’ kinda coat but also looks beautiful when dressed up.
The excitement is real for Skinny dip as they have launched a range of fab faux fur coats, I was lucky enough to acquire the black with white star print, and it is currently my every day coat, effortless sass in seconds.
Then this Mustard number from Next. Shorter than what I’d usually go for, but I love the colour SO much. I’ve used to it add a lil bit o’ something to more casual looks, pairing with a band tee, wide leg trousers and a baker boy hat was my favourite look with this.
And the finisher, the one I’d been lusting over for weeks, but didn’t have the courage to splurge, but then an opportunity arose which brought us together was this Patent latex look black trench coat with fur collar from Topshop. Need I say more? It's goth meet kitsch, my two opposing favourite styles together in harmony.
Jumpers have also made a comeback in my life, BIG TIME. I’m really pushing the boat out with being bold. My favourite jumper at the moment has GOT to be this oversized roll neck number from Asos. Its big enough to wear as a dress too, so fishnet tights and boots, you betcha, its a match made in heaven. Also the colour is perfect! Then a couple more from Asos, the zesty lime with the double flute sleeves thats super cosy and this bright yellow crop for a more playful feel. The Zebra print from Topshop that’s featured is also a favourite that already had its share of wear. A good ol’ knit jumper is a great asset this time of year to do the talking in an outfit, or you could use it to compliment the other staples. Experimenting with layering is also super fun, layering high neck shirts underneath, or even wearing a jumper over a dress? I also like to use colour contrast or compliment my hair colour.
Then there’s boots. For me, boots are an all year round occurrence. I love cowboy boots in the summer, and stand out or chunky boots for the winter. Usually my boots are stud laden or just generally do all the talking. My favourite boots of the season are my silver western boots from Topshop, they are perfect day to night boots and work with EVERYTHING. Then these white with silver studded beauties which are quite possibly the most comfortable boots I have ever owned. Then lastly, the dreamiest of leopard print dreams, we have my leather leopard lace up boots, that have a somewhat saloon gal kinda twist. These are just ultimately edgy, comfortable and totally me.
So there we have it, my favourite winter pieces that are a little more out there then your normal staples. Layering is so much fun and being extra bold and bright is great for brightening up the dark winter days.
