But the I held off writing about the new ‘do for a while, I wanted to wait and get a feel for them so I could give a more honest and accurate review after a few weeks when they’d settled in properly. But the time has come, to talk about… MY NEW EXTENSIONS!
I wanted to get some hair extensions for my wedding, the style I had in mind required a lot of hair and as we’re going on the honeymoon right away, I wanted to have long locks in paradise too.
I decided to get them in advance as a bit of a trial to see how I would get on with this particular kind. The type that I ended up trying are Balmain Keratin Bonds. I got them put in at my local salon by Paul. We had to colour match my hair to the available shades on the colour wheel and slightly tweak it in places so it would blend properly. A week after my consultation and colour, we then went ahead and put them in! It took all afternoon (150 pieces of hair later!) I needed so many as my hair is so naturally thick. It took about a week for me to get used to them… At first they hurt a little and also getting comfortable at bed time takes a while as the bonds feel bulky and a tad sore.
Keratin Bonds require a little maintenance and also can restrict what you do in some ways. Firstly, I try to avoid washing my hair too much as I don’t want to disturb the bond with too much product and also they take FOREVER to dry. Dry Shampoo is my friend these days and I’ve become a huge fan of the Oh Bee Hive! Matte Dry Shampoo from Bed Head by TIGI as it feels lightweight and doesn’t seem to leave any white residue. This was a god send at Coachella – believe me!
If I have to wash my hair, I always go for a gentle option, nothing with oils or parabens in. Something that is as weightless as possible and gentle too. The trick is to massage the shampoo into the roots and then when you rinse it, as the foam trickles down, it will wash the rest of the hair. For conditioner, I only apply it to the ends as it can make the keratin bonds slide off if applied to the scalp.
At bed time, I tie it up in either a high bun or in plaits. This is to stop any matting or knotting because I couldn’t honestly think of anything worse. Speaking of knots, brushing now requires a little more patience and technique than before as I now have to hold the hair tightly at the bonds and brush – just so any tugs aren’t too hard and pull the bonds out.
This is harder than it sounds, I’ve already lost 4 bonds – sad times.
What I love about them however is how they stay styled for days. I usually curl my hair straight after a wash and especially when I use the Bed Head by TIGI Maxed-Out Massive Hold Hairspray, I notice they stay curled or as a loose wave for about 3 days afterwards. Super handy!
I try to avoid using too much heat to keep the hair damage to a minimum so if I still want a little bit of smoothness with out turning to the tongs, I use the Bed Head by TIGI Headrush Shine Spray which smooths it out and keeps it looking healthy. This is honestly one of my all time favourite hair products!
Overall, apart from being a slight pain in the butt and high maintenance, I love my extensions. They boost my confidence so much and I feel so much more me! Im really glad I got them before going to Coachella, Download and my hen do because they give me much more freedom to do some fun styles. I just feel a tonne more sassy!
