Being a lover of old rock n roll, Motown soul and folk music, I find it quite difficult at times to enjoy newer artists as I have the mentality almost of an old person. Apart from a few exceptions ( Lady Gaga, Katy perry.etc….) I don’t REEEAAALLY listen to recent music.. HOWEVER… After downloading Spotify and realising that I can listen to anything I want free, I thought I’d go explore….
First Up Lana Del Rey never appealed to me, I think her first single was a bit boring so I was put off, but after watching the video for ‘Summer time sadness’ which you can see here, which from a film graduate’s point of view was particularly enjoyable, I was sucked in to the world of the sexy and extremely cool Lana.
With an irresistible classic voice that somewhat resembles that of an old time starlet, mixed with a contemporary expression of personality and emotion, Lana’s versatile and unique voice creates a movie soundtrack like atmosphere when listening. She mixes glamour with a sort of LA ganster chic vibe creating beauty and a feeling of hardship and struggle, even in her beautiful world. Both of her albums are addictive and so cool! Favourite tracks include : Summer Time Sadness, Ride, Lucky ones and Cola.
Then there’s Ellie Goulding… now I never really liked her to begin with, I thought her voice was a little irritating. But then I heard ‘anything could happen’ on the radio and I was annoyed at myself for enjoying it, so I gave up the act and got the new album Halcyon and I bloomin’ love it. Some of the tracks are a little weaker however the good ones make up for it. My favourite tracks are ‘ Anything could happen’ ‘only you’ and ‘hanging on’ They are groovy to dance to and a real good album to listen to when getting ready in the morning!
Now Back to my folky rock roots, two more artists that have taken my fancy recently include; The Decemberists and Of Monsters and Men. The first, The Decembersists have a sort of country, folk, pirate kinda thing going on with both male and female vocalists and an array of instruments that include violins, guitars, numerous percussion instruments, harmonica and my new favourite – the lapsteele.
They have an awesome range of jumpy fun songs and beautiful ballads with gorgeous harmonies. Favourite tracks include: ‘Rise to me’, ‘Don’t carry it all’ and ‘Clementine’.
The latter being Of Monsters and Men are a cute kinda Indie rocky folky band that I was introduced to by my lovely Duncan, my guitarist in my band, as an example of stuff he wanted to do. I loved it because its cute and catchy.
With having again a male and female vocalist (who sounds a little bit like Miss Goulding) they create impeccable harmonies that are subtle yet noticeably beautiful. They use a variety of guitars and percussion yet also fit in a little synthesized sounds for that little bit of a pop kick. Tracks I love include ‘ Dirty Paws’, ‘King and the Lionheart’ and ‘Love Love Love’. This album is going to stick with me also as I started listening to it when me and my boyfriend split up and I moved to my dads, it helped me through it, but it will remind me of change and moving forward.
So check them out if your bored or looking for something new. I will update on new music I find as well as ll the other stuff that goes on in my life. Thanks for reading! Love Love xx
